DATE: Sunday 24th February 2008
TIME: Meet at 9.45 a.m. for a 10.00 a.m. start. 3½ hour leisurely cycle ride including rests & a coffee break.
STARTING POINT: Ainslie Park Leisure Centre,(near entrance), 92 Pilton Drive, Edinburgh EH5 2HF.
ROUTE SUMMARY: This ride offers a relaxed cycle, largely away from traffic exploring places of interest in the city.
DISTANCE: Approximately 10 miles
DETAILS: Worried about cycling on roads! Well that's not an excuse to be used here.
We'll cycle along the North Edinburgh Path Network (part of which is formerly the Roseburn - Leith old rail path). We will head west, following a course parallel to Ferry Road. This section probably forms one of the busiest off road routes in Edinburgh. Plenty of cyclists, walkers & joggers. (Whilst not being a direct route to the city centre, the route could in fact be taken all the way to Haymarket Station. In addition to being traffic free, its' gradient is very easy & there are no interruptions such as traffic lights.) At Roseburn we'll join the path that snakes beside the Water of Leith. Today we'll go as far as the Slateford Aqueduct, where the very welcoming Water of Leith Visitor Centre is sited. (On another day you might choose to continue along the walkway and explore Colinton, Currie & Balerno).
We'll take coffee at the Centre before returning back by the same route.
