Outing to Swanston Jan 2006

TIME: Meet at 9.45 a.m for 10.00 a.m. start. 5 hour leisurely cycle ride including plenty of rest breaks & a stop for lunch at the Stables Bar in Mortonhall.

STARTING POINT: The Meadows, the junction of Middle Meadow Walk & North Meadow Walk.

ROUTE SUMMARY: This ride is one we have repeated from our 2007 calendar as the route was superb and the views spectacular. It is a full day out - we do take our time, & the children who joined us last year particularly enjoyed the ride - probably having more energy than a fair number of us. The chosen route sweeps round making the climb towards the Pentlands gentler, whilst also making the most of quiet routes, burn paths & farm tracks.

DISTANCE: Approximately 16 miles.

DETAILS: The ride will head south through the Grange, before heading to Prestonfield & Peffermill. The roads are quiet on a Sunday morning & our pace is steady as we head out along the Old Dalkeith Road & through the Inch Park towards Gilmerton Road & Ellen's Glen Road where we meet the Burdiehouse Burn and follow it all the way to the original Burdiehouse Village. From here we have a brief cycle along Frogston Road East before turning off at Broomhills & taking the farm track road to Morton Mains. Last year we passed a horse & trap out for a jaunt. We cycle through the Winton estate before joining the Biggar Road briefly to join another farm track on the fringes of the Pentlands, this one leading to Swanston Village. Here we are in Robert Louis Stevenson country, for his summer home was in the hamlet of Swanston. We'll stop to enjoy the views & the picturesque village & then return via Swanston Road & Mortonhall for a cafe break at the Stables Bar. From here the return stretch is much shorter through Liberton, West Mains & Causewayside to The Meadows via Hope Park Crescent.
